5 out of 5 stars At least it impresses   July 20, 2010

Everybody looks at the pen when you whip it out -- just like they look at the Rolex. Try not to wear your Fossil belt when you're wearing this pen.
Despite the price, it still misspells words.
Try not to drop it -- you'll look like a spastic fool.

5 out of 5 stars Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Dipolomat - 149 Fountain Pen   May 9, 2010

This fountain pen has an great feel to it, heavy but not too much. The writing is excellent, smooth, and decisive. The fountain pen allows you to feel that you are in control of the situation, makes you want to assure your writing is clear and expressive of your thoughts. This is the second Mont Blanc fountain pen I have purchased and the enjoyment of such a writing instrument continues to grow. The Meisterstuck Dipolomat - 149 Fountain Pen is a graduation gift for my grandson. My hope is that the fountain pen will give him the same pleasure that Mont Blanc has provided for me.

It has a very classical design and writes like a dream , just a look at the large 18K nib makes you admire the craftsmanship that goes into making these masterpieces.
you buy these and with proper care they may last a lifetime

5 out of 5 stars Montblanc 149 comparisons   May 17, 2009

Having had my MB pens for over a decade, I can share some observations. I have two MB 146 pens that are very nice and write well. The quality is outstanding, built to last a lifetime, yet fragile and easily damaged. The question is: what makes the 149 so special? Once you write with it, you know how special it is. I have large hands and the way this huge pen fits in my hand as I write makes writing effortless. The nib is also huge and, for some reason, so much smoother to write with than my other Montblanc pens, or any other pen I have ever used, for that matter. As far as I am concerned, the MB 149 is the ultimate writing machine. I love it. This pen should come with a desk stand. I am still looking for one in the older style.
The next question is value. There is no way I would pay anywhere near what people are asking for this pen, even used. I paid $100 for it in a pawn shop in 1996, feeling it was a good value. Considering how much I have enjoyed it, I think it was a good value, especially if it lasts for the rest of my life. Having said that, I also use a Sheaffer fountain pen that has written many miles and writes almost as nicely. I bought it new in 1988 for $4.00.
I hope you find this review useful. If you buy yourself an MB 149, use it at home and do not take it with you in your pocket from place to place. Get a pen with a metal enclosure for your pocket. A metal pen is more robust and will not be ruined if it falls onto the ground.

5 out of 5 stars my $65 montblanc 149   October 5, 2008

I have a Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 fountain pen I bought many years ago from Flax's Art store in San Francisco. This was back in the mid 1960's, and I paid $65 for it. I was (and still am, at Bausch Design) in the graphic design business, and this pen had a certain cachet at the time. Apparently it still does, though I am amazed at what they cost today!

I used mine through the years, but cleaned and retired it probably 10 years ago. I just got it out again, and after reading the Amazon reviews, think I will fill it, and fire it up again!

It is so great these days to discover (or rediscover) something that has a timeless value.
